• Description

  AIGA Cleveland was planning an event with Debbie Millman as the speaker and they needed an invitation designed for the event. Consolidated Graphics Group, one of AIGA Cleveland’s sponsors, offered to donate printing of the invitation as a variable data project.

  Since we offered the ability to use variable data for this project, I decided to design four separate invitations based on AIGA Cleveland’s membership. AIGA Cleveland has student, associate and professional members. I also broke the categories down by female and male. The four categories included: male student/associate member, female student/associate member, male professional member and female professional member. I did research on each demographic and designed invitations that I felt would be suited for each category. The male student/associate member invitation was based on rock posters and the grunge look. The female student/associate member was based on graphic tees. The male professional member was designed using one typeface repeating in the background in a corporate blue color. The word afraid was highlighted with a different typeface and color to break the monotony and draw attention to the call-to-action to attend the event. The female professional member used bright, bold colors against with brown lettering. Each invitation included quotes from one of Debbie Millman’s Design Matters podcast. It was from her opening commentary when she asked the question, “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”

  The invitations were a great success. AIGA Cleveland had a large attendance at the event. Debbie Millman was so impressed with the invitations that she said she was going to frame them and hang them in her office. The invitations were placed on a table at the event for Consolidated Graphics to promote variable data printing. I had the chance to talk to some AIGA members that really liked the invitations. They also liked the invitation for their demographic categories the most.
